Day 3: Kamloops to Jasper – Riding Through Nature and the Open Road
If you’ve been following along with my journey, you know that Day 3 of my motorcycle road trip was nothing short of amazing. From the wildlife park in Kamloops to the serene landscapes of Jasper, this leg of the trip offered a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and a few good lessons on riding and life. Whether you’re just starting out on your motorcycle journey or looking for some insights for your next trip, I’ve got some stories and tips that I hope will help you feel more confident on the road.
Morning Kick-Off: A Visit to the Wildlife Park
We started the day in Kamloops, a city known for its beautiful landscapes and outdoor activities. After a hearty breakfast with my motorcycle buddies—because let’s be honest, you need a good meal before hitting the road to keep you fueled up especially when it comes to riding long distances. We decided to take a detour and visit the wildlife park. Now, you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with motorcycle riding?” Trust me, it’s all connected.
Visiting a place like the wildlife park isn’t just about seeing animals (though that’s pretty cool, too). It’s a great reminder of the importance of staying aware of your surroundings—something that’s critical when you’re riding. Whether you’re spotting deer on the side of the road or navigating around slower traffic, being aware of what’s happening around you can make all the difference.
And let’s face it, starting your day with a bit of nature helps you get into the right mindset for the ride ahead. There’s something about watching animals in their natural habitat that makes you appreciate the freedom of the open road even more.

Hitting the Road: Kamloops to Clearwater
With the wildlife park adventure behind us, we saddled up and hit the road toward Clearwater. The ride from Kamloops to Clearwater is about 125 kilometers (around 77 miles) of pure scenic bliss. The roads here are a beginner rider’s dream—smooth with gentle curves, and the traffic isn’t too heavy.
Tip for Beginners: When you’re riding on roads like this, it’s a good time to practice your cornering technique. Remember, look where you want to go, not at the obstacle you want to avoid. Your bike will naturally follow your line of sight. Keep a relaxed grip on the handlebars and let the bike do its thing. Trust me, the more you practice this, the more natural it’ll feel.
We stopped for lunch in Clearwater, a small town that serves as a gateway to Wells Gray Provincial Park. Now, here’s a little nugget of wisdom: Don’t rush through your breaks. It’s tempting to want to get back on the bike and keep going, especially when you’re feeling good, but taking time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy a good meal will keep your energy levels up for the next leg of your journey.

An Unexpected Adventure: Fishing at the Hatchery
After lunch, we decided to take a detour to a nearby fishing hatchery. One of my friends is an avid angler and convinced us to give it a shot. Now, I’m no fishing expert, but I’m always up for trying something new. Plus, as a motorcyclist, you never know when you might find yourself in a situation where you need to be a bit resourceful—like figuring out how to fix a minor issue on your bike in the middle of nowhere.
Learning to fish was a lot like learning to ride a motorcycle. At first, it felt a bit awkward—holding the rod, casting the line, and trying to reel in a fish without making a fool of myself. But with a bit of patience and guidance, it started to make sense. I learned how to use a lure and bait, and I even managed to reel in a small fish!
The Lesson Here? Patience and persistence pay off, whether you’re fishing or riding. When you’re on your bike, especially as a beginner, you might find yourself getting frustrated if things don’t go perfectly right away. Maybe you struggle with a particular technique or feel nervous in certain situations. That’s okay. Take a deep breath, keep practicing, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice from more experienced riders. Everyone was a beginner once, and we’re all learning together.

The Final Long Haul: Riding to Jasper
With our fishing adventure wrapped up, it was time to hit the road for the final leg of the day’s journey—Clearwater to Jasper. This stretch was the longest of the day, and by the time we arrived at the East Cabins in Jasper, we were ready to call it a night.
Safety Check: Long rides can be exhausting, so it’s crucial to know your limits. If you start feeling tired, pull over at a safe spot and take a break. Fatigue can seriously affect your reaction times and decision-making on the road. Keep hydrated and nibble on some snacks to keep your energy up.
The road to Jasper took us through some of the most stunning scenery I’ve ever seen. Towering mountains, dense forests, and winding roads that seemed to go on forever. It’s moments like these that remind you why you fell in love with motorcycling in the first place. The sense of freedom, the connection with the environment, and the pure joy of riding are unbeatable.
A Note on Riding in Different Conditions: As we got closer to Jasper, the temperature started to drop, and the sun began to set. Riding in changing weather conditions can be tricky, especially if you’re not used to it. Make sure you have the right gear—a good jacket, gloves, and layers you can add or remove as needed. And if you’re ever unsure about the road ahead, it’s okay to slow down and take your time.
When we finally arrived at the East Cabins, we were greeted with the warmth of a cozy cabin and the satisfaction of a day well spent. There’s something incredibly rewarding about reaching your destination after a long ride, knowing you’ve navigated challenges and made the most of every moment.

Wrapping It Up: Reflections and Tips for New Riders
So, what did I take away from Day 3 of my road trip from Kamloops to Jasper? It’s all about balance—balancing your desire to explore with the need to stay safe, balancing the excitement of the open road with the wisdom to know when to take a break, and balancing your passion for riding with the patience to keep learning and improving.
If you’re a new rider, here are a few things to keep in mind:
-
- Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Whether it’s watching for wildlife, other vehicles, or changing road conditions, staying alert is key to staying safe.
-
- Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be afraid to practice new skills, like cornering or handling your bike in different conditions. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll become.
-
- Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated: Long rides can be taxing, so listen to your body. Stop for breaks, drink water, and don’t rush your journey.
-
- Embrace the Learning Process: Whether it’s learning to fish or mastering a new riding technique, remember that everyone starts somewhere. Be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process of learning.
-
- Gear Up for the Weather: The right gear can make all the difference, especially when riding in different weather conditions. Always be prepared for changes in temperature or unexpected rain.
And most importantly, enjoy the ride. Motorcycling is about freedom, adventure, and the thrill of the journey. It’s okay to make mistakes, to learn as you go, and to take the time you need to become the rider you want to be.
As I settled into my cabin that night, I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that the road ahead was full of possibilities. If you’re just starting out on your motorcycle journey, I encourage you to embrace every moment—because the adventure is just beginning.
Ride safe, ride smart, and most of all, ride with a smile 🙂
